A fresh word every day, in English. You get five to eight tries depending on the length, and color clues show you which letters are in the right spot. Two minutes a day, and a streak you'll never want to break.
How to play
You learn it in one try
Type a word. Any word of the right length. Koto won't reject a word just because it isn't in its dictionary: if it fits, it counts.
Read the colours. Green is the right letter in the right spot; yellow, a letter that's in the word but somewhere else; grey, a letter that isn't there.
Solve it in a few tries. If you get stuck, spend coins on a hint and keep going.
Come back tomorrow. A new word every day, the same for everyone, and your streak keeps growing.

One word a day, identical for every player. The length changes with the date, so the calendar isn't 365 identical puzzles.
Challenge calendar
Missed a day? It's still waiting for you. Every past date is its own puzzle, and how fast you solve it earns a gold, silver or bronze trophy.
Challenge a friend
Send a friend the word you just played and see who solves it in fewer tries.
Classic mode
Unlimited games whenever you want more. You pick the difficulty, with words from four to ten letters, and the topic.
Hints when you're stuck
Earn coins by playing and spend them on a hint when a word won't budge. A daily bonus tops you up for free.
Works offline
Play on the train, on a plane or with no signal at all. And you don't need an account to start playing.
FAQ
What people ask us
Is Koto free?
Yes. The whole game is free, with ads. There's a one-time purchase to remove the ads and optional coin packs, but nothing in the game is behind a paywall.
Do I need an account?
Not to play. The daily challenge, classic mode and the calendar all work without signing up. We only ask you to sign in if you want your progress saved in the cloud or a purchase restored on another phone.
A friend challenged me. How do I play their word?
Install Koto and tap the link they sent you again: it opens exactly that word. On Android, if you install from the button on this page, it opens by itself the first time you launch the app.
Which languages is it in?
English, Spanish, Danish, German and French. Each language has its own words, written for the people who speak it rather than translated. Koto follows your phone's language, and you can change it in Settings.
I lost my streak when I changed phones
If you signed in, your progress syncs and comes back by itself. If you played without an account, your progress only lives on the old phone. Write to us and we'll take a look.
Why does it accept words that don't exist?
On purpose. A built-in dictionary always falls short of the real language, and rejecting words left players stuck on their very first try. Any combination of the right length is checked and uses up a try.
